#NYFW Fall 2014 Day 5

NYFW Day 5 Highlights:

The Row:  Oversized, über cozy, hand-knit sweaters and matching skirts that one dreams about on a bitter cold day. Staggering, dramatic, voluminous silhouettes that envelope the body in luxurious fabrics. Blanket wraps effortlessly draped over the shoulders. The lack of embellishment and pattern create a calmness not often found in fashion. Too ponderous for my taste, but never the less, an elegant, timeless collection.

Notes: Volume. Drama. Clean, simple lines. A-line and cocoon silhouettes. Sans embellishment and pattern.

Alice + Olivia: Beautiful, detailed scenery set the stage for this enchanted fairy-tale inspired collection. Not the sweet, innocent fairy-tales our mothers read us, but a sexier, more perilous rendition. Less damsel-in-distress and more seductive sultana. Jacquards with a rich sheen and embellishment that glistened gave this collection a royal feel without being pretentious. A Victorian undertone resonated throughout with touches of lace, high-neck blouses, and long, baroque patterned coats. A collection that makes you feel more like a sensuous queen rather than a fairy-tale princess.

Notes: Lace, fur trims, and layered textures. Embroidered embellishments and bright prints on a midnight black ground. A-line skirts. Plunging neckline. Victorian influence.

3.1 Phillip Lim: A collection full of movement and drape with structured jackets to keep it grounded. The strategic color blocking, textured knit ruffles and the meandering collage of color and prints moved through the pieces, emphasizing the female form. The coats and jackets are beautifully constructed in familiar silhouettes, but the color-blocking and mixing of smooth leather and plush shearling make them fresh and new. The interjection of spring pastels with the deep jewel tones of Fall gave this collection a refreshing, airy feel that makes one not dread the bitter cold to come.

Notes: Collage of pastel colors and graphic prints. Feminine plaid.  Light, happy colors juxtaposed with more saturated tones of Fall. Color and fabric blocking. Large winged collars. Plush coats. Denim style jackets in plush fabrics.
